Find out how you can help families in Staffordshire this festive season by donating much needed supplies to your local foodbank
At Christmas many of us will be spending time with our families: exchanging gifts, attending parties and over-indulging in rich and expensive foods. Yet in stark contrast there are parts of the county facing a real food crisis where families are struggling to find the money for food.
The foodbank initiative, designed to help individuals and families in crisis through the provision of emergency food supplies, runs across Staffordshire with branches that include Leek, Cannock, Stoke-on-Trent, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Stafford, Rugeley, Lichfield and Cheadle. This Christmas it is urging local people to help in donating much-needed supplies.
Shockingly, in Stoke-on-Trent alone, the foodbank dished out 10,330 three-day emergency food supplies to people in crisis in 2016-17. Of which 3913 were given to children. But across Staffordshire there has been a 40% increase in the need and usage of foodbanks and a 10% decrease in donations from this time last year, which combine to create a real food shortage across the county.
As part of our Christmas countdown, LIVING will be donating to the food bank closest to our Trentham offices – the Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank, which is part of The Trussell Trust, and we would like to encourage you to do the same.
Any item is greatly received but some food banks may have a shortage on some items more than others. Stoke-on-Trent Foodbank are short of the following items:
