If your love of mulled wine goes to the extreme, Moddershall Oaks may just have the treatment for you. From today, 1st December, you can experience its limited edition Mulled Wine Body Scrub. LIVING’s Nancy Emery was invited to give it a whirl!
There are many things that we associate with Christmas – Santa Claus, Christmas trees and Christmas market shopping being some of the more obvious ones. But a visit to a Christmas market isn’t just about shopping, no. It’s also about sipping a warm, spiced mug of Glühwein – or mulled wine to you and I!
But if your love of mulled wine goes to the extreme, you may want to give one of the latest treatments at Moddershall Oaks a try.
The 5-star Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat, set in Staffordshire’s beautiful countryside and surrounded by its own private woodland and lake, is launching a limited edition festive Mulled Wine Body Scrub as part of its ‘Decadent December Spa Break’ package.
The Christmas-themed scrub promises to smooth away dry winter skin to reveal a beautiful and glowing complexion, and is infused with heady aromatics of mulled wine and the gentle scent of orange and spices. Well, as a fan of the drink, could it get any better?
Arriving at the Moddershall Oaks estate is always a pleasant experience, it’s a quirky place, not your usual-looking spa, the car park is spaced out over hills and the building is like one long continuous rabbit warren. But it’s luxurious and it has this air of quality, and staff are extremely friendly and accommodating.
On entering, you notice a good sized reception area and shop, and a lovely little cafe with views over the hills and access to the outdoor spa area. There’s a cosy and calming atmosphere throughout – it’s so private here, and everyone seems so relaxed – often to the point of slumber! Many guests were nodding off on the sofas by the fire in the ‘relaxation area’ – very tempting, I had to admit. But I had a date with a treatment table.
I made my way down the stairs, along the winding hallways, and back up the stairs to the spa area, where I waited for my therapist. Once the room was ready, she explained in detail what would happen during the treatment and checked through my medical sheet. Then she left me to get comfortable and ready for the scrub.
Now, if you’re wondering why anyone would want to scrub mulled wine over their body instead of drinking it, i’ll explain a little. In addition to its delicious and sweet taste, mulled wine is known for its antioxidant properties, and when combined with ingredients such as cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves, known for their anti-inflammatory and detoxifying abilities, it’s actually got some powerful benefits for the mind and body.
Who would have thought it? But before you go home to rub the remnants of your last home-made batch over your body… I was told that the scrub was put together by the Natural Spa Company, exclusively for Moddershall Oaks, so I wouldn’t recommend a DIY version.
My treatment lasted about 25-minutes, my therapist was gentle (if not a little too gentle) and I felt like I was in good hands. I was looking forward to that famous mulled wine scent permeating through the room, but it wasn’t until I turned onto my back that I could get a whiff of it and I suddenly came over all warm and snug. Did Christmas just arrive for me at that moment?
After she had completed the scrub, I showered with just water, and my skin felt fantastic – it appeared radiant and soft to touch – and my mind felt well and truly in the mood for Christmas.
The Decadent December Spa Break includes: 25-minute Mulled Wine Scrub or Elemis Frangipani Hot Stone Massage, 2-course evening meal in the Lakeside Restaurant, overnight stay in a 5* Suite, freshly cooked breakfast and full use of the spa facilities. Priced at £369 for 2 people sharing. Available Sunday – Thursday.
Moddershall has two outdoor spa areas overlooking the stunning views of Staffordshire’s countryside. One of which is for all guests and a second more private one reserved for those who are staying over in one of the ten on-site suites. There is also an indoor spa with its swimming pool, steam room and heated loungers, as well as the outdoor heated vitality pool and Kelo sauna, open to all.
As part of the package, guests will be greeted with a steaming glass of mulled wine and handed a fluffy robe and slippers to wear during your stay for added comfort. And you should wear it always, you’ll feel out of place if you don’t!
