Living girls Justine and Jemma were invited to Chesterton High School on 28th June 2012 to do a workshop with 50 pupils. Near the end of term, Years 7,8 & 9 are taken off timetable to partake in an activity they call ‘Skills Week’ where they delve into certain professions such as the restaurant trade and gardening. An excellent idea on all accounts and one of which we could only dream of when we were at school!
Living girl and fashion editor, Justine comments: ”After being ridiculously nervous beforehand the workshop ran without a hitch. I can’t say I’ve ever done anything like it before, but honestly I thoroughly enjoyed it. The pupils were excellent and so creative - they most definitely surprised me with their skills, a true credit to the school. I even saw a few star pupils shining through who should seriously consider a career in fashion within the media, I’ll have to watch my back!”
During the workshop, the Living girls gave each group a certain celebrity to reflect some of the top trends of the season, such as Jessie J for prints, Cheryl Cole for pastels and Rihanna for the American Retro look. The pupils then had to ‘Steal Her Style’ and find words to describe the trend/look. Choosing more outfits to reflect the style, deciphering between casual looks and partywear meant the pupils were kept entertained and engaged.
Finally after creating their mood boards, the pupils got to the nitty gritty into compiling an article with the research and activities they had been taught, writing introductions and distinguishing their article to the next.
Living girl and Art Editor, Jemma explains: “It was so hard to choose a winning group, I hated having to pick a winner and toyed back and forth with a number of the groups. But in the end we chose the Metallics team due to their knowledge of the trend and picking outfits with ease when most adults even find it tricky.”
Having picked up on scallop edging and the wetlook, these girls seemed to have the terminology yet the flair to back it up too. Well done team Metallic!
